Shining the Spotlight on Data Thrivers

Kristina Brand

A few years ago we introduced the NetApp® Data Fabric, which simplifies the orchestration of data for applications and analytics across the hybrid cloud. In the last year or so, we’ve been talking about how companies use the Data Fabric to become data driven – and how data visionaries lead the way to digital transformation.

Now our focus is shifting to data thrivers, the companies that attract new customers and create new revenue streams by embracing digital transformation. What makes a company a data thriver?

Every data thriver is different, but here are some commonalities:

  • Improve profitability by speeding up turnaround time from order to delivery.
  • Leverage data to improve customer satisfaction.
  • Implement a closed-loop process to ensure that business and IT work in unison.
  • Mitigate risks and adhere to security compliance regulations.
  • Share data uniformly, with insights spanning systems and applications.
You might wonder how many companies can currently be considered data thrivers. Last fall, NetApp partnered with IDC for a global survey, and the results split companies into five categories.

Data Resisters – 20%

These companies lag behind. In this scenario, IT and enterprise strategy lack alignment, and organizations deal with poor data management.

Data Survivors – 33%

In this category, companies recognize the need to develop a data-driven strategy, but execution happens on a project-by-project basis, without predictable or repeatable results.

Data Responders – 22%

Moving further into the data-driven world, data responders have aligned business and IT goals to create new products and services, but they haven’t realized the disruption potential of digital initiatives.

Data Synergizers – 15%

These companies have integrated their lines of business and IT management to deliver data- driven products and services on a continuous basis.

Data Thrivers – 10%

And finally –data thrivers. This is the goal for data-driven organizations – to aggressively use digital technologies to disrupt new markets, and to use data insights to drive business innovations.

Compared to data survivors, data thrivers have 6x improved operational efficiency, 3x increase in profitability, and 2x customer satisfaction. Data thrivers take advantage of the inherent flexibility of the cloud, scaling up and down on demand and paying only for what they consume, tying IT to business demand.
