Are You Protected? Oracle Database Protection and Availability

Most folks’ desire to “live a little” is balanced by an appropriate amount of fear. Fear of getting the company’s name in the headlines (for the wrong reasons). Fear of spilling your coffee on the boss’s laptop. Fear of losing your job. Fear (usually) protects us from stupidity. For those whose level of fear isn’t quite where it should be, I’m reminded of one of my favorite slogans: Stupidity should be painful. What do bubble-wrapped kids and pithy slogans have to do with protecting Oracle Databases? As it turns out, quite a bit. Protecting your Oracle environment is a lot about balance. When they’re initially questioned, C-level execs often state that no data loss is acceptable. Meaning that the RPO is 0. Which is certainly doable. But when they’re informed how much RPO=0 costs, most execs seek a more modest tolerance for data loss (depending on the application as well as the budget). They also don’t want to overburden employees with cumbersome and unnecessary data protection and availability requirements and processes. Hampering productivity could be more costly than some data loss or (mildly) extended downtime. It’s all about balance.
