Protection and security are only valuable if they do not cramp life excessively. — Carl Jung

Do you remember the picture of the kid all bubble wrapped to protect him from everything?

Sure, his mom is making certain that he’s least likely to sustain an injury from just about anything.  She’s also ensuring that he’s not likely to have much fun. We all gotta live a little – y’know?

Just as courage imperils life, fear protects it. — Leonardo da Vinci

Most folks’ desire to “live a little” is balanced by an appropriate amount of fear. Fear of getting the company’s name in the headlines (for the wrong reasons). Fear of spilling your coffee on the boss’s laptop. Fear of losing your job. Fear (usually) protects us from stupidity. For those whose level of fear isn’t quite where it should be, I’m reminded of one of my favorite slogans: Stupidity should be painful. What do bubble-wrapped kids and pithy slogans have to do with protecting Oracle Databases? As it turns out, quite a bit. Protecting your Oracle environment is a lot about balance. When they’re initially questioned, C-level execs often state that no data loss is acceptable. Meaning that the RPO is 0. Which is certainly doable. But when they’re informed how much RPO=0 costs, most execs seek a more modest tolerance for data loss (depending on the application as well as the budget). They also don’t want to overburden employees with cumbersome and unnecessary data protection and availability requirements and processes. Hampering productivity could be more costly than some data loss or (mildly) extended downtime. It’s all about balance.

I’m privileged to work with some truly smart folks. Ebin Kadavy, technical marketing engineer, is one of them. Ebin has produced a session for this year’s NetApp INSIGHT®  (BRK-1133-2 Business Continuity and Data Availability Solution for Oracle). If you have anything to do with an Oracle database, you should attend. In this session, you’ll learn about the numerous options for backup and recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuance for Oracle databases with NetApp® infrastructure.  Also, you’ll find out what you need to consider to craft an architecture that meets your RPO, RTO, and budget. Register today.

In the meantime, check out the NetApp’s Oracle Solutions webpage to learn about all the ways NetApp can help you derive more value from your Oracle investment.
