“The purpose of computing is insight, not numbers.”

- Richard Hamming

Chart: Time in iLevel Heat Map Cycling

I’ve been racing bicycles for nearly 40 years. I truly enjoy the analytical aspect of tracking my training. For the past 15 years or so, I’ve raced and trained with a power meter. The idea with using power as a training metric is that whether you’re going uphill, downhill, into or with the wind, fought with your spouse, are well hydrated or dehydrated, etc., a watt is a watt. All of those factors (and more) affect your heart rate one way or another, making it difficult to discern the training effect from what effect the “other stuff” is having on heart rate and training.

Training with power as a metric also enables a whole slew of ways to view what’s going on when I’m riding my bike. Power:Heart rate ratio (watts:beats-per-minute), track external training stress, modeled anaerobic capacity, functional threshold power, VO2max, and more – lots more. Here’s the point: Having all this data is pretty cool. There are plenty of ways to manipulate the numbers and come up with new ways to view the data. The thing is, though, it’s just numbers if you don’t take the time to understand what the data says about you – and then act on those newly gleaned insights to improve your performance.
