He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery. —Harold Wilson

If you’ve read my previous post on change, you might have noticed that consultancy firms like to write about embracing change. Change this. Change that. At times, I find this advice a little self-serving. What would consultants do for a living if Fortune 1000 companies stopped changing? I guess the point is moot, because change is inevitable. And perhaps the role of consultancy firms is to help companies navigate change. That makes sense.

Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts. —Arnold Bennett

So, why change when it can be a pain? Most companies (and people) change to survive. Survival is good. But just trying to survive is not embracing change. Embracing change is changing in order to thrive: You seek out opportunities to change that bring greater success. Sure, change isn’t easy: It rarely goes smoothly. That fact is why you need a team that understands the methodology of change. That A comes before B, which comes before C. And that planning and practice are required before going live.

Success is in the vision. Survival is in the details. —Matthias Giraud
