For over 25 years, we at NetApp have specialized in making your “flight” with us most comfortable by continually helping your business get the most out of your data. And we continue to innovate and to expand our portfolio of industry-leading data management services. An important part of the NetApp® portfolio is our software-defined, object-based storage solution for hybrid clouds.

So, today, I would like to welcome you aboard the NetApp StorageGRID® 11.6 “flight” and guide you through an innovative experience on the way to your chosen destination. Let’s go!

Review the travel tips information

Hello passengers. On behalf of the NetApp crew, welcome aboard the StorageGRID 11.6 flight to your favorite destination. For your own comfort, we would like you to take a moment to review the travel tips card to make your hybrid cloud journey a success. And now please listen for information about today’s flight.

First, you’ll notice that NetApp StorageGRID 11.6 has reached general availability. In this new release, we:

  • Include a new five-star cloud service destination.
  • Introduce some security enhancements that help make your flight more relaxing.
  • Offer some additional amenities to help you have a safe and pleasant flight.

Now let’s take a look at the top new features and key improvements in a bit more detail.

Explore the new hybrid cloud destination

Many enterprises are already customers of the cloud hyperscalers. With this release of NetApp StorageGRID, we introduced integration with Google Cloud, so you have more choice. Our industry-leading hybrid cloud integration now extends to the largest hyperscalers: Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud.

So, just like you shop around for the optimal airline ticket price and destination, you can now add Google Cloud as an option for tiering or replicating your object data. Take advantage of Google Cloud’s low-cost storage tiers and automatically tier your cold StorageGRID data. Or replicate a subset of your hot data to Google Cloud and use their compute services to perform analytics.

Get quick insights about your flight

The deployment of object storage is becoming popular for enterprise analytics, which means that applications need faster performance. NetApp StorageGRID 11.6 adds new capabilities to speed performance for analytics.

With Amazon S3 Select support, you can use simple SQL queries to accelerate Simple Storage Service (S3) object data querying performance for analytical workloads. By using Amazon S3 Select, you can retrieve a subset of the S3 object content instead of retrieving the entire object. This approach significantly reduces the amount of data that S3 transfers, thereby reducing the cost, bandwidth, and latency to retrieve that data.

StorageGRID 11.6 therefore offers the most direct flight for your data, at an optimal price. You can perform simple SQL operations against your raw data that’s stored in StorageGRID and optimize data retrieval by querying for only the data that your application needs.

Take advantage of extra services onboard

Object storage use cases have evolved, increasing small file workloads such as for artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, databases, and Internet of Things (IoT). At the scale of petabytes, this increase leads to billions of objects and constant read, write, and delete workloads.

NetApp StorageGRID 11.6 offers first-class service at economy-class prices. StorageGRID SG60XX nodes now support up to 2 billion objects and have improved delete performance.

Comply with regulations and safety requirements

Storage compliance with all the government regulations can be a challenge. NetApp StorageGRID S3 Object Lock enhancements and AWS Secret Region support help you meet your regulatory obligations and compliance requirements.

By configuring a default write once, read many (WORM) retention with StorageGRID S3 Object Lock at the bucket level, you automatically protect objects that are stored in a bucket. So, it’s easy to meet your regulatory obligations and compliance requirements by configuring default retention at the bucket level.

With StorageGRID 11.6, government organizations also now benefit from support for the AWS Secret Region. This region is available to enterprises with appropriate security access through a Commercial Cloud Services (C2S) contract with AWS. The C2S contract supplies AWS services to serve and to support the U.S. Intelligence Community. These organizations can now perform NetApp StorageGRID CloudMirror replication from StorageGRID to C2S for the full range of classified data.

So, you can feel safe and secure on your flight with StorageGRID. Protect your classified data assets by being able to replicate your most security-sensitive data to the AWS Secret Region.

Keep your seatbelt fastened

Ransomware attackers, hackers, and data breachers are not allowed on this flight. The StorageGRID 11.6 release adds to the NetApp portfolio of security capabilities.

Support for multiple virtual LANs (VLANs) enables enterprises and service providers to separate networks between customers. To isolate traffic, to enhance security, and to meet diverse network policies, hosting providers can now place each tenant on a separate VLAN.

StorageGRID 11.6 flight is jam packed with content! This release also introduces identity features, usability enhancements to the Grid Manager, support for an external syslog server, and streamlined upgrade and hotfix processes. You can read about the new features and improvements in detail on the StorageGRID documentation center.

With your StorageGRID 11.6 seatbelt securely fastened, you can easily meet security requirements and increase your system flexibility and network efficiency.
